Whether we like it or not, technology, especially social media and messaging applications have become a big part of our lives

It was tremendously helpful to be able to text my HKBU partner without cost because I could speak to her whenever I wanted. The instant reply made it feel as if I was talking to her in real life. By using messaging apps, we were able to send pictures to each other whenever we want. As both of us are into arts, we bonded even more by sending photos of our artwork. I found myself using those pictures as prompts to continue the conversation, it was easy to start talking by sending her a picture of something I thought she might like. It could be a picture of my graphic novel collection (she really likes graphic novels) or it could be a picture of a vegan burger I was trying. I don't have to be too selective because it's free. We both live in different countries yet we are able to hold conversations and actually be able to see what the other party's life is because of instant messaging apps.

Using instant messaging apps has become such a norm to me that I barely even think about it. As someone living overseas, away from my family and friends, I rely on those apps even more than I used to. They're my only way of communicating instantly and with zero cost. I do enjoy the good old process of writing a letter, buying stamps, and mailing them. I also enjoy opening the mailbox and finding a letter addressed to me. But they take time. And when I just want to share about the french toast I made for breakfast or a screenshot of Melbourne's unpredictable weather report, I would, of course, turn to something faster. All these small, little things matter are what drives a relationship with someone especially when I was trying to develop a friendship with a total stranger.

Being able to talk about random things happening in our lives so easily bridges the gap between my HKBU partner and I. Without the ability to get replies instantly like when talking face-to-face, I don't think I would be able to connect to my partner as well as I did. The way we were able to speak back and forth really helps us learn more about each other in a short time.

Take away instant messaging apps from me for a day and I fear that I might not be able to survive because that would be removing one of the easiest method of communication with people both from overseas and locally. It's incredible how a single app is used by so many people. It's bringing people who are miles away from each other together, helping us share information with just a few taps, and making sure that we are all connected. It's pulling the world closer together like a seamstress who's sewing pieces of cloth to make a garment.
